Who are we?
The South West Yoga Academy (SWYA) comprises a small group of committed diploma course tutors (DCTs) who are all trained by and have worked under the auspices of the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) for many years. We teach this course because we know it is the most thorough yoga teacher-training available.
This yoga teacher training course is for those who love yoga and wish to learn how to share its benefits with others. The SWYA welcomes applicants who recognise that teaching yoga in a safe, authentic and wholistic way is important and that it takes an in-depth course of study to achieve that. The course is aimed at students who are looking for a high quality training with a varied range of experienced and qualified tutors.
This course is for those who are looking for a firm grounding in all aspects of yoga and an opportunity to learn and develop teaching skills with confidence in a friendly and non-competitive environment. This training will suit those who value working with a team of highly qualified and experienced tutors within a group of dedicated students. We welcome applications from students who having a desire and willingness to learn and who are ready to dedicate themselves to this course of study. Students from all yoga traditions and styles are welcome.
Course Overview
- 500-hour yoga teacher training course
- 3 experienced and qualified course tutors offering you a variety of experience, knowledge and teaching styles
- 1 introductory day and 33 full days over 2.5 years
- Some extra Zoom sessions (totalling 20 hours) at ad hoc intervals throughout the course
- Individual tutorials (10 hours)
- Guided home study and online interaction
- 2 external class observations and professional feedback
- Coaching and support as you begin to teach
- Varied content on each study day

- Asana – the practice and teaching of individual yoga asana in depth
- Structural and functional anatomy, as it relates to teaching yoga
- Stress and relaxation
- Meditation – theory, practice and teaching
- Pranayama – theory, practice and teaching
- The tantric theory of prana and the chakra system
- The Hathayoga Pradipika
- Kriya, mudra and bandha
- The history of yoga
- The different traditions and paths of yoga
- The philosophy of yoga
- Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras
- Vedanta and Samkhya philosophy
- The Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads
- Integrating yoga philosophy into life and teaching
- Adult teaching and learning – understanding how we learn in order to be a better teacher
- Teaching skills – class management, voice and language, presentation, dealing with nerves, teaching techniques, finding your own style
- Understanding the needs of individual students
- Dealing with ailments and injuries in class
- Sequencing of asana
- Lesson and course planning
- Legal aspects of teaching yoga
- Professional and ethical aspects of teaching yoga
- Marketing and administration of classes
- Dealing with money and being self-employed
- Continuing as a learner and developing your own personal practice
The Diploma weekends will be varied and will include guided asana, pranayama, relaxation and meditation practices, student micro-teaching sessions, class discussions, short lectures, small group tasks, group and pair work activities to develop teaching skills.
